- W1983276211 abstract "The mechanism of regulation of RNA synthesis during recovery of Escherichia coli from Mg2+ starvation was studied. 1. The synthesis of RNA by cells recovering from Mg2+ starvation can be divided into three stages. During stage 1 (0 to 1 h) RNA synthesis proceeds rapidly. RNA synthesis declines to approx. 20–40 % of the initial rate during stage 2 (1 to 4 h). After this period (stage 3) RNA synthesis rapidly accelerates. 2. The slowdown of RNA synthesis during stage 2 can be overcome by supplementing the recovery medium with a complete mixture of amino acids, or by adding chloramphenicol. 3. The results indicate that a general amino acid deficiency during stage 2 results in a depression of RNA synthesis. The mechanism of depression of RNA synthesis appears to be identical to that which occurs when “stringent” strains of E. coli are starved for a required amino acid." @default.
