- W1983614381 abstract "IMMEDIATELY following the cessation of hostil ities in 1945, the Japanese, under the direction and guidance of the occupying powers, embarked upon a reform of educational purposes, institutions and processes. The educational and parallel political social changes sought were at some points so dis continuous with historical patterns that m a ny ob servers have been pessimistic about the outcomes, frequently invoking Friedrich's paradox of demo cratization by force (8) and contending that there forms were based upon absurd anthropological, so ciological, and psychological assumptions. Most commentators, however, found in the occupation procedures (3, 13, 18), the Japanese character (2) and supporting precedents in Japanese political his tory and educational experimentation (19), some grounds for optimism. The first comprehensive analysis and evaluation of all aspects of the attempted e d u cational reform was begun last year by the University of Tokyo un der a grant from the Ford Foundation; the projected three-year research program undoubtedly will pro vide some indication of the extent to which the Jap anese have been able to effect these reforms. At the present time, however, data directly relevant to the question are not available, although recent studies of Japanese social and political institutions (10, 11, 15) and personal orientations (4, 9, 17) suggest identifiable transitions in the direction of democratic modalities." @default.
