- W1984135926 abstract "PEDIATRICS is the science of the growing child, and it therefore is essential for every paediatrician to monitor and chart the growth of each child who is under one’s regular follow-up. Why? Because if the height gain is too slow, or too fast, and similarly if the weight gain is too slow or too fast, it can alert us to take action early. Almost all pediatricians will use the “Road To Health” card for the first 3 years of life, and then suddenly lose interest in growth, almost as though health is important only in the first 3 years of life!! Right from the initial years of intensive contact, the paediatrician must emphasize to the parents that the young one has to come for a “well visit” at least twice a year, through childhood and adolescence. This would be the opportunity to monitor growth and pubertal development, and impart relevant health messages. The need for regular monitoring and charting of growth and sexual development becomes even more vital in the presence of any chronic disorder like asthma, heart disease, malignancy, nephrotic syndrome, etc. It is tragic how often we pediatric endocrinologists see adolescents being brought with the complaint of short stature long after their epiphyses have fused. So what should our approach be when we see a child who either presents with concern about height, or is seen to fall off the percentile curves?" @default.
