- W1984275852 abstract "MAA1-O-04 Epidemiological research on heat-related mortality indicates that the negative health impact of heat is not homogeneous within the population. Sociodemographic characteristics have been associated with an increased risk of dying from heat. Among these, age has been found to be the most important one, with an increase among persons older 65 years that increase rapidly with advancing age. Several studies report a higher risk for women, even if evidence is contradictory. People living alone and/or in low socioeconomic areas are more susceptible. Evidence for an association with an increased risk has been reported for patients suffering from chronic diseases, such as neurologic, endocrine, electrolytic and psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and pulmonary diseases, and kidney and renal insufficiencies. In Italy, the Ministry of Health is implementing a program for the prevention of the negative health effects of heat. To tailor the prevention measures for target groups at major risk, a protocol for the identification of the susceptible subgroups has been developed on the basis of the scientific evidences. In 2005, this protocol was applied to the population of the city of Rome. Through a stepwise procedure, for each resident, an individual risk score was calculated. On the basis of the results of a case-crossover study and the analysis of summer 2003 mortality in 4 Italian cities, the following information was retrieved for each citizen: demographic characteristics (sex, age, marital/family status), health status (using the hospital admission registry of the 2 preceding years), and socioeconomic level of the area of residence. The single items were summarized in an overall score, and each person was allocated in 1 of the 4 risk categories (low, medium, high, and very high). Furthermore, patients treated in nursing homes or included in special health care registries (eg, Alzheimer, dialysis) were added to the list. Among the 2.8 million residents in Rome in 2005, 19,737 were classified in the high-risk and 7159 in the very high-risk categories. The lists of patients at high/very high risk were transmitted to general practitioners, who then passed on information on health and social care providers to their patients and their families and actively monitor patients at risk on hot days. The focus of prevention strategies on target groups allows for more efficient and cost-effective interventions." @default.
