- W1984472912 abstract "SummaryIt would seem that the hydrophilic lenses, as yet, have a number of basic problems to overcome. In optical correction, the prime object is to provide maximum visual acuity which is relatively constant. The initial comfort afforded by this lens is not maintained over the normal waking hours, by a sufficiently high proportion of wearers, to claim ascendancy over conventional corneal lenses. The formation of bacteria or fungi within its media is a function potentially dangerous to the cornea, and the problem of removal has yet to be solved satisfactorily. The concept of a permeable flexible lens is a good one, but it would seem that the metabolic processes of gaseous exchange are no closer, and in fact further removed from solution than in the use of the harder acrylic lenses. Their rigidity does maintain a clearance from the cornea in at least some portion of their proximity to this surface, and allow pre corneal tear flow and exchange of gases.Perhaps more exact inner curve tolerances, and a better relationship over a smaller corneal area, will improve both expected visual acuity and longer tolerance with an even greater improvement in comfort." @default.
