- W1984487890 abstract "Food allergy has the highest prevalence in pre-school (aged 3-5 years) children. However, allergy is often self-diagnosed by parents without formal medical involvement. We decided to assess parents' views of food allergy in their children by using a validated questionnaire. Questionnaires were distributed among seven local schools in the Scunthorpe area. Questions were asked about the presence of allergy, symptoms, allergens, method of diagnosis and treatment. 264 replies (36% response rate) were received and 11.4% of the parents reported their children to have food allergy. The commonest foods attributed were cow's milk (20%), peanut (20%), egg (10%), fish and shellfish (10%), soya (10%), food colourings (13%) and preservatives (23%). The symptoms reported were rash (60%), swelling (27%), diarrhea (23%), wheeze (13%). Allergy was blamed by parents in 30% of cases because of symptoms of irritability (20%), hyperactivity (26%) and behavioural problems (3%). 40% of these were self-diagnosed (no medical input), and all were being managed by food avoidance. Of those seeking advice, 50% of parents' received advice from their general practitioner, 30% from health visitor and 26% were referred to Hospital and investigated (paediatrician/allergist services). There was a trend towards implicating more foods and more symptoms as allergies with higher maternal education and thus higher erroneous self-diagnosis of food allergy. Parental self-diagnosis of ‘food allergy’ is common and is frequently associated with inappropriate dietary manipulation and failure to seek appropriate medical advice. As allergy services are available in the area, the problem is therefore one of inadequate public education." @default.
