A similar procedure was followed using freshly packed red cells (hematocrit 75%), using the same needle gauges but speeds of only 20 and 50 ml/hour. Controls were obtained by measuring plasma hemoglobinin untransfused specimens. Data were analyzed using the Student t test. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION We found no significant difference in plasma hemoglobin values between control and samples, indicating that no significant hemolysis occurred, even at the highest speed tested and using the smallest needle (Table). We conclude that fresh whole blood or packed red blood cells may be transfused through needles of small caliber, even 27 gauge, at relatively high infusion rates without increasing the risk of hemolysis." @default.
