- W1984805351 abstract "In 1979, Keith Middlemas published a groundbreaking book, Politics in Industrial Society: The Experience of the British System since 1911.1 It has influenced later work by historians less than might have been expected, perhaps because the focus of political historians on formal party politics, which Middlemas sought to challenge, was too resilient and firmly entrenched. Yet, it became clear at a symposium held at the Institute of Historical Research to mark the thirty-year anniversary of the book’s first publication, that it was, and remains, an important, original work of historical scholarship which still has much to contribute.2 Middlemas’s central aim was to understand the unusual stability of British politics between the wars and after, compared with other European countries where extremists of left and right gained power. His particular contribution was to point out that previous British historiography had suffered from, as he put it, a bias ‘towards the study of parties, almost to the exclusion of other institutions’, and from a lack of studies satisfactorily linking ‘ “high politics” at Westminster with structural developments in the constituencies and on the shop floor’.3 So-called ‘grassroots’ opinion, he argued, had been considered only insofar as it was affected by party political leadership and how that leadership was in turn conditioned by it. This approach, he suggested, does not help us to understand British political stability. Nor did the alternative explanations, dominated as they were by either a Whiggish narrative of gradual constitutional change dating back to 1688, skilfully managed by elites, or by its Marxist counterpart: the failure of the English working class to achieve its historic destiny due to the peculiar structure of British politics and society.4" @default.
