- W1984920305 abstract "PURPOSE This abstract presents previously unknown in the West information regarding the development and use of blood doping in the former USSR. Both the Department of Biochemistry and the Division of Bioenergetics of the Central State Institute of Physical Culture in Moscow (USSR) carried out research programs devoted to the application of ergogenic aids in the training of top athletes. All the work was ordered and sponsored by the USSR's State Sport Committee and the procedures involving blood withdrawal, storage, and preparation for transfusion were performed at the Central State Institute of Hematology and Transfusiology (Volkov 1990). METHODS Studies described, were performed in two groups of athletes: middle and long distance runners, who were members of the USSR national team, and members of the national swim team of Russia, were divided into an experimental group and a control group. Two blood doping protocols were studied. In one, 450 mL of whole blood was removed, stored for 18–22 days, and reinfused into the athletes. In the other, 450 mL of blood was withdrawn three times, and erythrocytes were separated, frozen, and stored in liquid nitrogen. After 20–50 days, the red cells were thawed, resuspended to 1,000–1,100 mL, and reinfused into the athletes. RESULTS Aerobic and anaerobic powers were assessed before and after blood letting as well as after reinfusion. Volkov (1990) observed a dramatic increase in maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) during a training season in swimmers undergoing blood doping, when compared with the control group. CONCLUSION The evidence revealed that the practice of blood doping was pervasive in the former USSR: middle and long distance swimmers, cyclists, rowers, skiers, biathlon athletes, and skaters used this procedure in the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games." @default.
