- W1984923512 abstract "Analysis of the assessment methodology typically employed in the assertion literature suggests that researchers tend to assume the functional equivalence of those standard stimulus situations used in measurement. This assumption is examined in the present investigation. Data were obtained from empirically assessed nonassertive subjects to determine the functional value of various interpersonal situations in which assertion would be appropriate. The method of successive intervals was applied to these data to develop a continuum along which interpersonal situations can be ordered in terms of their rated response difficulty. The standard scores derived as a result of this process were then used as the basis for an alternative measurement format in which assertion can be assessed across homogeneous groups of standard stimulus situations of known stimulus value and differing response type. A discussion of the use of this assessment strategy in studies of assertion is also included." @default.
