The target words from the Assessment of Phonological Processes (Hodson, 1980) were evoked from each child in both a labeling task and in connected speech. Analyses based on the Assessment of Phonological Processes indicated that more phonological processes were observed in the connected speech samples than in the samples generated from the labeling task. However, the similarities in the children's performances in the two contexts were far greater than the differences. The severity ratings recommended by Hodson and Paden (1983) and the clinical decisions that are based on these ratings were the same for each child, regardless of the manner in which speech was sampled.
