- W1985340010 abstract "We present a review of recent studies on recombining (overionized) plasmas in supernova remnants (SNRs) with Suzaku and other satellites. During a SNR's evolution, the ambient matter and expanding ejecta are compressed and heated by the forward and reverse shocks to form an X-ray emitting plasma. Since ionization of heavy elements proceeds slowly compared to shock heating, SNRs are normally observed to have ionizing (underionized) plasmas. Therefore, the discovery of strong X-ray emission formed by recombination is dramatically changing our understanding of the dynamics and evolution of SNRs. Interestingly, all the SNRs that have overionized plasmas are categorized as a mixed-morphology class, suggesting the origin of this phenomenon is somehow connected to massive progenitors exploding in a dense environment." @default.
