- W1985376095 abstract "There has been and will continue to be conflicting schools of thought concerning the role of higher education. The pure academician would argue perhaps that higher education has a responsibility to deal only with students' cognitive development. Student personnel specialists, on the other hand, would argue that the institution has a responsibility to meet broader needs of its students. I agree with the latter position which focuses on the educational, vocational, social, and moral needs of students. When colleges and universities aggressively recruit students to their campuses for the purpose of preparing them to compete successfully for jobs after graduation, they assume, in my opinion, a moral obligation to assist their students in various ways as they progress toward successful completion of their educational objectives and career plans. An increasing number of educators contend that as an inherent responsibility colleges and universities must provide a wide range of services and programs designed to support the students' educational plans. Today academic advising and career guidance surface as central educational activities; colleges and universities that value the career-related needs of their students must develop strategies that will elevate the importance of academic and career advising. Therefore, there must be a commitment to academic advising as a significant educational mission of the university at all levels of the administrative hierarchy-from governing board to president, academic vice-president, deans, departmental chairpersons, and faculty. Anything short of this level of commitment may result in an inferior, dissipated program of academic advising. To continue a hit-or-miss advising system commonplace among most sister institutions of higher education would sustain a level of mediocrity none of us want. In my judgment, the single most important factor contributing to a strong academic advising program is commitment of the institution. Good academic advising programs require allocations of human (financial and physical) resources. If the administration at any college or university acknowledges that academic advising is an important and necessary educational service, but then fails to support that commitment both fiscally and psychologically, academic advising will be neglected in the future as it has been in the past. Stated simply, there is no substitute for the strong administrative support of a program of academic advisement. Also, effective academic advising programs do not just happen; they are" @default.
