- W1985410491 abstract "Abstract Two cases of hemangioma associated with thrombocytopenia in infancy are presented together with pertinent laboratory data and details of surgical treatment. A review of the world literature on this subject is presented and seventy-four cases are analyzed with regard to sex and age incidence, sites of predilection, methods of treatment, mortality, and theories of thrombocytopenia production by hemangiomas. It must be recognized that thrombocytopenia may be associated with hemangiomas more often than is suspected. The clinician should investigate larger hemangiomas by taking frequent platelet counts during infancy, especially in rapidly growing lesions. Thrombocytopenia, purpura, or active bleeding are emergency situations and should be followed by aggressive treatment of the lesion by surgical excision if possible, and by irradiation if the lesion is not resectable. Splenectomy and corticosteroid administration are ineffective. Fresh blood and platelet-rich plasma are important adjuncts in the treatment of this disease. Thrombocytopenia is most likely caused by platelet sequestration and destruction within the hemangioma, but other causes are possible. Other coagulation defects such as decreases in fibrinogen, factors II, V, and VII have been implicated. The mortality for the seventy-three patients whose outcome is known is 21 per cent, a rate which should cause the clinician to be aware of the deadly potential of some hemangiomas." @default.
