- W1985655561 abstract "Sedimentological studies of Waulsortian carbonate mud banks have suggested that they grew at depths of between 300 m and some tens of metres. Nautiloids, which are relatively common in Waulsortian rocks in Ireland, provide an independent means of assessing the bathymetry of the mud banks. The implosion depths of a fauna of several species of orthoconic and coiled nautiloids from a quarry in the upper part of the Waulsortian at Mullawornia, County Longford have been estimated from the thickness and radius of curvature of the septa. These estimates (65–170 m) are somewhat less than depths inferred from sedimentological study. Almost all the coiled nautiloids in the quarry are preserved with their shells vertical. The shells sank as the phragmocones flooded slowly and were anchored quickly either by ingress of sediment into the living chamber, or possibly by the sticky surface of the mounds. Orthoconic nautiloids preserved at high angles to the sedimentary surface with the apex down were either rotated into this position after deposition, or completely flooded during sinking and reached velocities sufficient to become embedded in the sediment." @default.
