- W1985672234 abstract "Abstract Assuming that preeclampsia of pregnancy could be caused by immunological alterations in the materno-fetal relationship, mixed lymphocyte cultures were performed. 30 mother-baby pairs after preeclampsia were compared with 26 pairs after uncomplicated pregnancy stimulated by phytohemagglutinin. Only male offspring were included in the study so that the fluorescence of the Y-chromosome could be used as a marker in the mixed lymphocyte cultures with maternal cells. After uncomplicated pregnancy there was a preponderance of fetal cells (84.1% fetal, 15.9% maternal cells). After preeclampsia, however, the fetal mitotic activity decreased to 69.6%. Statistically this was significantly less than after normal pregnancy. There was no correlation with the severity of the symptoms. In further experiments fetal cells were combined with nonrelated maternal cells. A decrease or increase of fetal cells was observed according to whether the mother was preeclamptic or not. Our findings suggest that the immunotolerant state of the mother in normal pregnancy is changed to cellular hyperreactivity in preeclampsia." @default.
