- W1985687110 abstract "Abstract Paleoecological interpretations have steadily improved over the years as new environmental settings on the modern Earth have been discovered, and have been incorporated into an ever-growing set of actualistic models for interpreting ancient environments and ecologies. However, it is apparent that there are paleoecological questions which do not yield satisfactory solutions through the strict application of actualistic models. Thus, it is possible for ancient biological attributes of the environment to no longer exist or be predominant in modern settings. For these features a non-actualistic approach provides the key to understanding ancient ecologies. Until recently, non-actualistic approaches have been most commonly taken by Precambrian paleoecologists. However, it is time for Phanerozoic paleoecology to adopt some of the healthy scepticism about actualism that characterizes the methodology of the Precambrian paleoecologist. Much of the growth of the new discipline termed “evolutionary paleoecology” will depend upon the insights provided through application of a non-actualistic viewpoint. The development of this approach is not an indication of the errors of actualism, but of the increasing maturity of methodologies available to the Phanerozoic paleoecologist." @default.
