- W19857539 abstract "This paper describes the results obtained from a biological wastewater treatent pilot plant research investigation undertaken during 1974–75 at the dissolving acid sulfite pulp mill of Alaska Lumber and Pulp Co., Inc., at Sitka Alaska. This is one of the largest dissolving acid sulfite pulp mills in the world. The purpose of these studies was to obtain information which would permit a treatment process selection and to establish treatment plant process engineering design criteria. The treatment processes evaluated included air activated sludge, oxygen activated sludge and rotating biological surface. However, the rotating biological surface process was judged inapplicable due to the lack of available land space and thus not directly considered in this paper. The strategy of the design solution was complicated by the geographical remoteness of the plant location and the very high cost of energy generation and manpower at the mill site. The study results indicated that the high purity oxygen activated sludge system possesses significant process superiority over air activated sludge when treating this mill's wastewater discharges. The recommended oxygen aeration tank process design loading was F/M applied = 1.0 compared with 0.6 for air activated sludge while obtaining high BOD5 removals. Similarly the oxygen system exhibited an allowable clarifier process design mass loading of 44 lbs/ft2 /day and 4.0% underflow solids consistency compared with 30 lbs/ft2 /day and 1.0%, respectively, for the air activated sludge. Also, the oxygen system exhibited greater process stability during shock loading and following start-up after extended mill production shutdown. This paper describes the results obtained from a biological wastewater treatment pilot plant research investigation undertaken during November, 1974, thru April, 1975, for the purpose of establishing process selection and engineering design criteria to treat pulp mill effluents discharged from the magnesium base dissolving acid sulfite pulp mill of Alaska Lumber and Pulp Co., Inc., (ALP) at Sitka, Alaska. These pilot plant investigations utilized the combined staffs of ALP, EKONO Inc., and Howard Edde, Inc., Consultant Engineers. The mill is Japanese owned. Most of the mill's production is shipped to Japan for production of rayon and other synthetics. The mill is located on a small delta of Sawmill Creek six miles east of Sitka in Southeastern Alaska. Sitka is recognized as a fishing and tourist area besides being the former Russian Capital of Alaska." @default.
