- W1985788021 abstract "Some philosophers have argued that relativism is not defensible because the doctrine itself is not intelligible. In a recent book and two papers1 Hilary Putnam has repeatedly denied the intelligibility of relativism. He has offered a range of arguments, or hints of arguments, which will be answered, one by one, in this paper. Putnam has been particularly opposed to the relativist's criterial or culture-relative of rationality, proposing a conception instead; but his own formulation of the non-criterial and his arguments in its defence will be seen to be inadequate. What can a relativist consistently claim to follow from his doctrine? Putnam is right in saying that he can scarcely assert that his own culture's beliefs are no better justified than any other's, for that would leave him unable to assert anything rationally at all. The relativist presupposes the superiority of most of his own cognitive beliefs from the start. Does that mean that the doctrine of cognitive relativism, if intelligible, is harmless? I will argue it does not, for the facts to which the relativist draws attention, if true, provide good inductive grounds for thinking our beliefs about the world though possibly true are probably false, in a correspondence sense. I think we may still be justified in believing them, however, for pragmatic if not epistemic reasons." @default.
