- W1986015890 abstract "In his review of ultraviolet light perception in animals and its possible role in navigation, Toveel states that birds seem unable to detect polarized sky-light and therefore do not use it as a mechanism for navigation. In fact, there is a considerable body of evidence from conditioning and physiological studies with homing pigeons and from behavioral studies on migratory birds, that birds not only perceive polarized light, but that it comprises an integral part of their orientation capability. The first evidence for avian perception of polarized light came from cardiac conditioning studies on homing pigeons by Kreithen and Keetonz and electroretinogram recordings by Delius et a/.3. Coemans et a/.4 claimed to have replicated both of these studies with negative results. Aside from the perils of interpreting negative results (especially from conditioning experiments), the experimental procedures employed in the attempted replication differed in important ways from those used by Kreithen and Keeton. In addition, Coemans et al. tested only four pigeons. Kreithen and Keeton obtained responses from only three of 12 birds. Thus on the basis of sample size alone, it is unlikely that Coemans et al. would have obtained a positive result, Both Kreithen and Keeton and Delius et al. were well aware of the potential artifacts to which Coemans et al. attributed their results, and their papers describe and discuss the precautions they took to eliminate and control for them. The matter will be resolved only by further experimental work. I have recently reviewed the evidence from a number of species of birds showing that spontaneous migratory orientation is responsive to manipulations of polarized sky-light5. Outdoor orientation cage tests with Polaroids involve an unnatural stimulus and the possibility of artifacts. Although it seems quite unlikely, it is possible that the results could be explained by the color gradient model of Coemans et" @default.
