- W1986021316 abstract "I A PREVIOUS article (l), the shock sensitivity test performed at this laboratory on propellants and explosives was discussed in some detail. The sensitivity of a material is determined by the thickness of a Lucite-cellulose acetate gap separating donor and acceptor at the 50% point of detonation. The scale is a relative one and, while useful, is restrictive in its application. However, by combining the velocity of a shock front in Lucite with the equation of state of Lucite, it is possible to calculate the pressure associated with the shock front at any point in the Lucite. An equation of state for Lucite may be defined by combining the data found in the literature for Lucite (2), Plexiglas (3, 4), and Perspex (5). These materials are quite similar, and it may be assumed that the properties in the shock region are the same. However, the lowest shock strength defined by the data is at the upper end of the region (50 kbars and higher) critical to this investigation. The data are quite scattered, and the extrapolation becomes suspect. To interpret this region (50 kbars and below), the shock pressure was determined for two points using the boundary approximations between Lucite and water. This approach was first applied by W. C. Holton (6) and is similar to that used by M. A. Cook and L. L. Udy (7)." @default.
