- W1986202959 abstract "This paper investigates the use of weigh-in-motion (WIM) data in the context of UK pavement design procedures. The effects of different power laws on the production of vehicle wear factors (VWFs), design traffic and subsequent pavement thickness design are investigated using two sources of WIM data. With the exception of one site, the average VWFs obtained are lower than those currently used in UK pavement design procedures, although the variability is quite high. Typically, the minimum pavement design traffic prediction was obtained using a fourth power law. Using current UK pavement design procedures for a range of materials, the effect of different exponents can make a difference of up to 50 mm to the pavement design, depending on the expected traffic level. The various errors associated with WIM measurements and the effects of these errors on the production of VWFs and subsequent pavement thickness design are investigated. Three effects have been identified, these being those due to calibration error, random sensor error and dynamic loading. It is found that, using a fourth power law, the effect of sensor/dynamic and calibration errors is to overpredict the traffic by typically 15–20% which is likely to result in a 5–15 mm overdesign of pavement thickness for typical flexible pavement structures." @default.
