- W1986332007 abstract "Abstract The River Ecclesbourne in Derbyshire is a relatively simple ‘real’ ecosystem in which to study potential pollutants: it has a drainage area of 50·4 km2, and is naturally contaminated with lead, zinc and cadmium from mineral veins at the head of the valley. These veins do not appear to have had a drastic effect on the fauna and flora. The water is reasonably hard, with about 40 mg litre−1 Ca++, and has a conductivity of about 200–500 μS cm−1. Sediment samples were taken from a number of positions at twenty-two sites along the length of the river, and from seven tributaries. Samples from each position and site were graded into particles of three different sizes, and then analysed for their total lead, zinc and cadmium content. The residual errors showed that, for analyses of variance, logarithmic transformations of metal concentrations were preferable to untransformed data. Precision was increased greatly for pulverising samples in a ball mill before sub-samples were analysed for their metal content: a relatively few particles contained a major part of the metals. An appreciable increase in precision for a given number of analyses at one site came from analysis of one sub-sample from one sample taken at each sampling position. The major difference in concentrations was between sites, with a general trend for concentrations to decreased downstream, and there appear to be ‘pulses’ of sediments with relatively high concentrations that nove down the river. There was significant variation between positions on a single transect, but there did not appear to be any consistent pattern in these differences between positions. The organic content was small (2·1–3·5%) and did not affect metal content, and smaller particles did not have higher metal concentrations than larger particles." @default.
