- W1986543291 abstract "Abstract A procedure for measuring the matching of predicted and reported fear was applied to Gray's theory in an attempt to distinguish between the effects of under-predicted and over-predicted mismatches on the behavioural inhibition system (BIS). Forty S s who feared snakes were asked to predict how much fear they would experience on approaching a live harmless snake. These predictions were compared to the fear reported after the approach, and each trial was then classified as a correct match, under-predicted mismatch or over-predicted mismatch. The expectation that under-predicted mismatches would be accompanied by hesitations, but that over-predictions would not, was confirmed. Expectations regarding the slowing of performance during under-predictions were not confirmed directly. It was concluded that Gray's theory might benefit from introducing a distinction between the effects on the BIS of the two types of mismatch—under-predictions and over-predictions. Earlier findings on the consequences of mismatches of fear, and on increases in predictive accuracy of fear, were replicated." @default.
