- W1986669753 abstract "Abstract The eyeblink and vertex potential were measured simultaneously while human subjects were presented with brief white-noise bursts at various intensities and interstimulus intervals (ISIs). The plasticity of the two response systems was compared. The amplitude of the eyeblink increased during initial stimulus presentation or when weak stimulus intensities were presented in the context of strong intensities (sensitization). It decreased when the ISI was reduced (temporal recovery) and also decreased across the recording session (habituation). Across individual subjects, the magnitude of habituation between various parts of the session correlated positively to the magnitude of habituation across other parts of the session. In addition, magnitude of habituation correlated negatively to the rate of temporal recovery. On the other hand, sensitization seemed to be relatively independent, since it did not correlate to either habituation or temporal recovery. The vertex potential showed sensitization and temporal recovery but did not habituate. Despite the fact that both response systems showed parallel changes in many instances, the magnitude of these changes did not correlate between the two response systems and suggests that earlier reports that have concluded that the eyeblink and vertex potential are highly related systems may have limited generality." @default.
