- W1986745779 abstract "Described is a study which has been made on the accuracy with which energies can be measured using an ionization spectrometer having iron as the principal absorber. Fluctuations in the energy response of the spectrometer have been determined as a function of primary energy, the depth of the spectrometer, the spacing of the ionization sampling layers, and the accuracy with which the ionization sampling measurements are made. This has been done using a Monte Carlo model of the nuclear-electromagnetic cascade in iron. The model was first adjusted until it gave predictions for a small spectrometer which agreed with observations made when the same spectrometer was exposed to 10, 20.5 and 28 GeV protons at an accelerator. The calculations were then extended to various spectrometer configurations and to primary energies up to 1000 GeV. It is found that the accuracy of primary energy determination is most strongly dependent on the depth of the spectrometer. This accuracy is only weakly dependent on the frequency with which the ionization is sampled and on the accuracy with which the ionization sampling measurements are made. For relatively large spectrometer depths the accuracy improves with increasing primary energy, although the improvement is small for energies greater than 100 GeV." @default.
