• W1986786299 abstract "The speed of cleaning and disinfection of contact lenses is a significant factor in patient compliance with lens care regimens. A solution that offers the advantage of speed, CIBA Vision QuickCARE Starting Solution, was compared with Alcon Opti-Free Rinsing, Disinfecting, and Storage Solution and Bausch & Lomb ReNu Multi-Purpose Solution for antimicrobial efficacy by the use of time course microbial reduction/survival tests. These solutions were tested against the five Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-recommended challenge organisms and a group of 15 recent bacterial and fungal isolates, the virulence of which may not have been attenuated through long-term storage. QuickCARE Starting Solution killed 80% (12 of 15) of test isolates in 1 minute. In contrast, ReNu required at least 2 hours of disinfection time to kill 53% (8 of 15) of the isolates and 24 hours or more to kill 47% (7 of 15) isolates. Opti-Free killed only 13% (2 of 15) of the test isolates in 2 hours and required at least 24 hours to kill 87% (13 of 15) of isolates. Gram-negative organisms tested were resistant to the Opti-Free solution: only Pseudomonas aeruginosa was eradicated within 24 hours. The filamentous fungi were resistant to both Opti-Free and ReNu, which did not kill them in 24 hours. Three microbial species, Curvularia lunata, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Bacillus coagulans, were more resistant than the other organisms tested to all of the test solutions. None of the test solutions killed the highly resistant, spore-forming bacterium B. coagulans. QuickCARE Starting Solution demonstrated overall superiority against all of the FDA-recommended challenge organisms and 14 of the 15 clinical isolates. Its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity took place within 5 minutes, suggesting that the QuickCARE System, when used according to package instructions, would be useful for encouraging user compliance with recommended lens care procedures.
