- W1986850190 abstract "Homologous series of alkylagaroses are capable of adsorbing erythrocytes, and exhibit an increased capacity for these cells with increasing length of their hydrocarbon chains. The cells can be desorbed from the columns by repeated pipetation in the presence of bovine serum albumin, with essentially no physical entrapment or lysis of the cells. Moreover, the cells eluted from the column and those yet to be applied have an identical osmotic fragility profile, indicating that the cells are not significantly damaged by the adsorption-desorption procedure. It is suggested that the binding of the cells to the columns is mainly due to hydrophobic interactions, since columns with identical charge density exhibit different capacities for erythrocytes, according to the length of their hydrocarbon chains. Erythrocytes from different sources exhibit different adsorption profiles on homologous series of alkylagaroses, raising the possibility that such columns may be used for discriminating between closely related cells and for probing their surfaces." @default.
