- W1987227935 abstract "Abstract The objective of this paper is to quantify the alertness issue associated with working the irregular hours inherent to the wireline logging and well testing operations of the oilfield service industry. It is widely recognized that oilfield service operations benefit from a well-rested and alert crew. However, operations can involve long, irregular work schedules, unplanned events, long periods of relatively low activity, sleep disturbances and/or circadian disruption. This can result in a fatigued crew working at a dangerously low alertness level. A simple response is to go to shift work and/or limit the number of hours worked in a given period. However, advancements in the scientific research on human biological clocks do not necessarily condone this methodology. To understand alertness in the oilfield services industry, a questionnaire was developed to provide a qualitative reference identifying employee perception of the issues affecting alertness. The questionnaire is initially used to provide baseline data and finally to monitor progress/change. Actigraph measurements provide quantitative support data with actual measurement of the sleep/rest activity of crews over a period of time. The data provide the necessary correlation to the circadian rhythm and sleep bank status. Preliminary results indicate that the circadian rhythm plays the primary role in alertness. The ideal solution is to eliminate the dangerous activities during definite low alertness periods in the circadian rhythm. The realistic solution is to understand means to impact the alertness level of the individual and implement strategies to maintain the level required for the operation. Understanding the recent advances in scientific research on the human biological clock and introducing effective management of the switches of human alertness will lead to maximization of alertness on the job. Cultural change will result as the knowledge on the effects of irregular work hours and effective napping strategies evolves." @default.
