- W198724923 abstract "To the extent that larvae of estuarine organisms are retained in their estuary of origin, population genetic theory predicts differences will develop among conspecific populations inhabiting different estuaries. The rate at which these differences evolve depends most importantly on genetically effective population sizes, the intensity of diversifying natural selection, the magnitude of larval “leakage” among estuaries, and the demographic history and stability of extant populations. While electrophoretic techniques are now routinely employed to gather gene frequency data from natural populations, lack of information on these ecological, demographic, and historical factors often renders interpretation of such genetic data equivocal. Larval leakage cannot be inferred from genetic similarities among populations in different estuaries because populations may be large, diversifying selection weak, or time since divergence insufficient for evolution by random genetic drift. Where differences do exist among estuaries, closer inspection of gene frequencies in larval populations and in new recruits, together with experimental manipulation of these, may help narrow the limits on some of the parameters affecting divergence. Genetics is thus a necessary, but not a sufficient, component in the investigation of larval retention in estuaries." @default.
