The material accumulates at the epithelial surface with a distribution similar to that of ultrastructurally identifiable collagen. The suggestion that the label actually is in collagen is in conformity with, but not conclusively demonstrated by, the facts that collagen is rich in proline and glycine and the label is removed by collagenase treatment of sections but not by hyaluronidase treatment. On the other hand, embryonic salivary epithelium initially labeled with proline or glycine does not similarly deposit label in a pattern which coincides with the distribution of collagen. The data are interpreted to favor the hypothesis that basement membrane formation involves transfer of soluble tropocollagen from the mesenchyme, where it is synthesized, to the epithelial surface, where it is polymerized." @default.
