Repetitive electrical stimulation of the optic nerve produces a steady potential field in the region of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate body of the cat which persists for as long as 5 sec. after the end of stimulation. 2. 2. The amplitude of this steady potential response at a given point is an approximately linear, increasing function of the strength and frequency of stimulation within the threshold and maximum values of these variables. 3. 3. The amplitude of a maximum steady potential responsse at a given point to repetitive stimulation is approximately the same as that of the first post-synaptic response to a single shock of equal strength recorded at the same point. 4. 4. The distribution of this steady potential field is such as would accompany a steady potential gradient along the proximal portion of the geniculate neuron, the soma being negative to the axon. 5. 5. Photic stimulation produces similar steady potential responses which reflect the patterns of optic nerve fiber discharge described by previous investigations to follow illumination of the retina." @default.
