- W1987358174 abstract "It has been estimated by biologists studying modern terrestrial ecosystems that the number of plant/arthropod interactions exceeds the combined total of the species involved. Many of these interactions have been considered co-evolutionary and yet few palaeoecologists have been concerned with this topic. Data on such interactions are not only essential for an understanding of ecosystem dynamics (e.g. energy flow in a terrestrial community) but also may untangle possible co-evolutionary processes affecting the plants and arthropods through geological time. There are however, various types of data which need to be considered in the fossil context. These include: Comparisons with modern day arthropods and plants and a consideration of their interactions; arthropod morphology, particularly when considering extinct groups; gut contents of arthropods and a study of diet; coprolites (faecal pellets)—their shape, size and contents; plant anatomy and morphology; damaged plants (including nibbled leaves, bored seeds and wood etc.); pollination mechanisms and dispersal vectors. We present examples of each type of interaction from the fossil record (Devonian-Tertiary) and emphasise the importance of such data in terrestrial palaeoecological studies. Les biologistes étudiant les écosystèmes terrestres actuels ont démontré que le nombre des interactions plantes-arthropodes dépasse le total de celui, des espèces concernées. Un grand nombre de ces interactions sont co-évolutives; cependant peu de paléoécologistes se sont intéressés à ce sujet. Les informations obtenues sur de telles interactions sont fondamentales pour la compréhension de la dynamique des écosystèmes (par exemple des flux d'énergie dans une communauté terrestre) et elles permettent aussi d'élucider les processus co-évolutifs concernant les végétaux et les arthropodes au cours des temps géologiques. Plusieurs catégories d'informations doivent être considérées plus particulièrement dans le contexte fossile; il s'agit de: la comparaison avec les arthropodes et les végétaux actuels et leurs interactions; la morphologie des arthropodes, notamment des groupes disparus; le contenu du tube digestif des arthropodes et l'étude de leur nourriture; les coprolites (pelotes fécales), leur forme, taille et contenu; l'anatomie et la morphologie des végétaux; les dégats causés à ces végétaux (feuilles grignotées; graines et bois perforés, etc…); les mécanismes de pollinisation et les vecteurs de dispersion. Des exemples de chaque type d'interaction sont présentés d'après des documents fossiles du Dévonien au Tertiaire. L'importance de telles informations pour les études de paléoécologie terrestre est soulignée." @default.
