- W1987387511 abstract "Abstract The central nervous system controls the endocrine system and also responds to it. Peptide- and steroid hormones are important messengers in this brain-endocrine dialogue and also serve communication within these systems. The present contribution examines (i) the genomic control exerted by steroid hormones on structure, function and chemistry of central peptide circuitry and (ii) the effect of a peptidergic drug on central steroid hormone receptors. The data demonstrate that hormones may change and shape the properties of hormone-sensitive circuitry that underlies adaptive and reproductive behaviour. The action of the hormones may either be trophic or degenerative depending on the ability of the organism to handle environmental challenges and to maintain homeostasis. These new insights suggest a hormonal basis for individual differences in psychopathogenic conditions and may provide future therapeutic strategies to treat stress- and age-related diseases." @default.
