- W1987399855 abstract "Several transition-metal oxides with formula MxTOm exhibit a wide phase field and high electrical conductivity. These “bronzes” consist of a (TOm)n covalent network into which are inserted xM+ (or M2+ or M3+) cations that donate their outer electrons to the transition-metal array to give a mean formal valence per T atom of +(2m − x). The conducting electrons may be either delocalized over the covalent network or localized at discrete T atoms. Best known are the tungsten bronzes MxWO3, in which the donor M cations occupy tunnels of square, pentagonal, or hexagonal crosssection within a WO3 network of corner-shared octahedra. Which bronze structure (cubic, tetragonal or hexagonal network) is stabilized depends upon the size of the M cations and their concentration. With low values of x, some of the WO3 octahedra are irregular, characteristic of the antiferroelectric distortions found in WO3, and the compounds (or two-phase mixtures) are semiconducting. The cubic, tetragonal and hexagonal bronzes, which occur for larger values of x, are all metallic. The molybdenum bronzes MxMoO3, though generally analogous to the tungsten compounds, appear to be metastable under normal conditions. The vanadium brozes, on the other hand, form quite a different structural family. In general, the vanadium ions have an irregular anion coordination that is intermediate between a triangular bipyramid and a regular octahedron. Most familiar are the MxV2O5 series, but other chemical formulae are possible, several with a double mechanism of nonstoichiometry. Mixed vanadium-molybdenum and vanadium-tungsten families have also been studied. Titanium and manganese bronzes, which are derived from the rutile structure, also exist. All available physical data for these systems are presented, and the electronic properties are discussed in terms of specific structural features." @default.
