- W1987524712 abstract "We describe a protocol to measure methanol crossover in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) based on methanol mass balance. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is used to quantitatively monitor methanol molar concentration of the anode effluent, and time-averaged anode effluent flow rate is measured at any given current density. We demonstrate that the accuracy of these measurements is sufficient to yield methanol crossover results with less than 10% standard deviation. In contrast, the conventional method without correction for permeated carries measurement error of 20–95%, and procedures to correct for permeated erode the simplicity advantage while carrying new measurement uncertainty. Aided by FTIR, our method is simultaneously straightforward and capable of in situ measurement. We applied this protocol to studies of methanol crossover of Nafion 117 membranes as functions of the cell temperature, current density, and reactant flow rates. Our results are in good agreement with literature results at open-circuit voltages. We determined that methanol crossover is strongly dependent on both the cell current density and the anode fuel flow rate." @default.
