- W1987657792 abstract "1. Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels were measured in burrows of the California ground squirrel, Spermophilus beecheyi. Mean burrow oxygen concentration in summer was 18·3 per cent, and in winter 17·6 per cent. Mean carbon dioxide levels were 2·4 and 2·9 per cent, respectively. 2. No erythrocyte parameters were found to correlate with these gas concentrations, the Bohr shift fell within typical mammalian values, but the oxygen dissociation curve exhibited a leftward shift. Comparative hematological data from other sciurids are presented. 3. Polycythemia could not be induced by exposing the animals to burrow gas concentrations for times approximating burrow occupancy. 4. At a temperature below thermal neutrality, exposure to burrow gas resulted in a significant decrease in body temperature. Oxygen consumption did not vary significantly with gas concentrations at any temperature tested." @default.
