- W1987686245 abstract "Marquart et al. (1993) reported that a 20 sec Wingate (WG) test could predict the results of a 30 sec test while reducing physical discomfort for males. We replicated their study using 30 females (age = 25.1 ± 3.7 yrs, ht = 163.2 ± 7.5 cm, wt = 56.6 ± 6.8 kg). The Subjective Exercise Experience Scale (SEES) (McAuley and Courneya, 1994) was used to determine Positive Well Being (PWB), Psychological Distress (PD) and Fatigue(F). The Exercise-Induced Feeling Inventory (EFI) (Gauvin and Rejeski, 1993) was used to measure: Revitalization (REV), Tranquillity (TRN), Positive Engagement (POS), and Physical Exhaustion (EXH). Differentiated ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were collected using the Borg 6-20 scale. Subjects performed a standard 30 sec (WG30) and a 20 sec (WG20) WG test in a counterbalanced order. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Stepwise regression procedure. ANOVA revealed no differences between trials for: PWB, PD, F, REV, TRN, POS, or EXH; RPE overall ratings (RPEo = 14.7 ± 2.2 vs 15.6 ± 2.3); or blood lactate (LAC) values (Lac = 8.5 ± 2.3 vs 9.4 ± 2.2 mM for the WG20 and WG30, respectively). However, the RPE central ratings were significantly different (p<0.05) between trials (RPEc = 14.8 ± 2.0 vs 16.03 ± 2.2, respectively). No differences were found for WG peak scores (467.7 ± 65.0 vs 468.6± 70.0 W, respectively). The R2 for regression equations to predict WGmin and WGmean from the WG20 data were 0.93 and 0.85, respectively. It was concluded that the WG20 could accurately predict WG30 test results. However, based on the SEES and EFI data, no advantage could be seen in regards to the subjects' affect when using the WG20 vs the WG30 protocol." @default.
