The purpose of this report is to make clear the relations of wear to various crystal orientations as well as to surface roughness in cutting Aluminum alloy and Nylon with the diamond tool. Primary results obtained by observation under the scanning electron microscope are as follows: In the case of cutting Aluminum alloy, a smooth and flat wear land is observed on each of the rake face and flank. With the progress of cutting, the wear lands grow in stepped geometry corresponding to feed rate but hardly influenced on surface roughness. In the case of cutting Nylon containing the filler, microfracture by cleavage occurred on the flank and its surface is in parallel to the (111) plane of the diamond crystal orientation. In the case of cutting pure Nylon, only slight wear occurs on the cutting edge." @default.
