- W1987733883 abstract "Abstract Sedimentary zeolites of possible economic interest occur in the Miocene tuffs of the Suchilquitongo Formation, in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The zeolites were formed by alakline diagenesis of rhyolitic glass, possibly in an open hydrologic system. The essentially unaltered glass occurs in fresh tuffs containing from 65 to 90% glass and from 35 to 10% pyroclastic albite, plagioclase, quartz, and minor hornblende, tourmaline, biotite and smectite. As the elevation decreases from the upper to the lower layer of these tuffs, the glass is hydrated to 9% and its content of Si, Al, Na and K are slightly depleted, whereas Fe, Ca, Mg, and the ratio Si/Al have increased. The zeolites diagenetically formed from the glass are in tuffs containing about 15% pyrogenic constituents (sodic plagioclase, quartz, and minor hornblende, tourmaline, oxybiotite, pumice, and scoria) and 85% glass; the glass is between 20% to almost completely replaced by zeolites. Two distinct diagenetic tuff lithologies are formed. One lithology occurs in the upper layers of the tuffs at an elevation of 1500–1540 m on the NW margin of the lake basin in which the tuffs were deposited. It is characterized by (Na, K, Ca) clinoptilolite which crystallized from the residue of the glass after Si, Al, Na and K were partially leached and Fe, Mg, Ca, and the ratio Si/Al, relatively increased by a percolating alkaline fluid. A second lithology, at elevations from 1540 to 1545 m, 1482 to 1500 m, and below 1380 m, includes mordenite associated with opal and sanidine or intermediate microline and formed when the glass dissolved to an amorphous leachate from which mordenite cyrstallized. The chemical compositions of the vitric and zeolitic tuffs, the fresh and altered glasses, and of the amorphous leachate and the zeolites, suggest that within the system SiO2 Al2O3 H2O (Na2O + K2O + CaO + MgO) the zeolites formed by means of a progressive diagenetic alteration. This alteration is characterized by hydration of the rhyolitic glass and alkaline leaching to a leachate with an increased content of Si and other components to the levels required for the crystallization of mordenite, and to a leached glass with a depleted content of Si appropriate to the crystallization of, or replacement by, clinoptilolite." @default.
