Each kind of precursor is characterized by a Gaussian distribution of threshold. Accurate probability curves of laser-induced damage (1-on-1, 5-ns single shot at 1.064-μm) are plotted in the bulk and at the surfaces of optical components. Results are then fitted with the model presented. A good agreement is obtained between theory and experiment, which permits to identify different kinds of defects and extract their densities and threshold distribution.
