The reaction proceeds by thermolytic opening of gem-dibromobicyclo[4.1.0]heptane intermediates, which are readily accessed from simple starting materials. Mechanistic studies suggest the reaction proceeds via an autocatalytic process mediated by methyl hypobromite.
