- W1987829480 abstract "Risk of mouse sensitization is greatest with moderate exposure to mouse allergen. The effects of endotoxin exposure on risk of sensitization to mouse are unknown. Adults (18-74y) newly employed in a mouse facility were enrolled. Participants were skin prick tested (SPT) and wore personal monitors for breathing zone air sample collection every 6 months. Mus m 1 (MA) and endotoxin (ET) content in air samples was quantified by ELISA and limulus amebocyte assay (LAL). +SPT was defined as a net wheal >3mm. Atopy was defined as ≥1 +SPT at baseline. Participants were stratified into tertiles based on MA exposure. ET exposure was dichotomized at the median. Relationships between MA exposure, ET exposure, and incident mouse sensitization were examined using Cox proportional hazards models. 193 participants were followed for a median of 24 months. 54% were female. 52% were atopic. The median MA and ET concentrations were 1.42 ng/m3 and 3.2 EU/m3 respectively. MA and ET concentrations were correlated (rs=0.41, p<0.001). The median follow-up time was 24 months. 35 participants became sensitized to mouse during the study period. ET was not associated with mouse sensitization. Among participants with moderate MA exposure, the risk of mouse sensitization was attenuated with high endotoxin exposure (HR [95% CI]: 0.53[0.13-2.15] and 1.23[0.24-6.32] for high and low ET, respectively). Both the level of MA exposure and the level of ET exposure may influence the risk of sensitization to mouse. Endotoxin exposure may be protective for mouse sensitization among workers with moderate levels of MA exposure." @default.
