- W1987831240 abstract "Seedling infection of Bromus catharticus Vahl by Ustilago bullata Berk. occurred before seedling coleoptiles reached to mm in length, and resulted in plants on which all developing panicles possessed entirely infected spikelets. Teliospores of U. bullata germinated and produced sporidia more rapidly on the host embryo surface than on the rest of the seed pericarp. After plasmogamy, dikaryotic hyphae grew along the coleoptile epidermis and penetrated coleoptile cells directly. Unbranched and lobed hyphae were observed within coleoptile cells. Shoot infection, in which plants became infected at stages of vegetative growth other than the very young seedling, was studied in detail in U. bullata for the first time. Shoot infection resulted in plants that produced both healthy panicles and panicles with infected spikelets, and occurred readily under field conditions. Plants were susceptible to shoot infection at all stages of growth from seedling primary leaf length greater than 10 mm to flowering." @default.
