- W1987960396 abstract "B Y VIRTUE of its location in the heart, the function of the specialized conduction system has until recently been relatively inaccessible to direct study. Some information has been obtained from direct studies of isolated Purkinje fibers, l from studies of the specialized conduction system in isolated perfused hearts,*-* and from interpretations based on electrocardiographic studies and clinical observations. From these observations it has been suggested that in the specialized conduction system the duration of local refractoriness may be longer than in the myocardium. One isolated direct observation on the recovery of excitability of an intramural Purkinje fiber bundle has been reported.5 Use of modern surgical technics in cardiovascular research now permits the study of specific structures within the heart, including the specialized conduction system, by means of surface electrodes positioned under direct vision .6,7 The present report presents the first direct study of the excitability cycle of three major subdivisions of the specialized conduction system of the in situ heart. These data include observations on the bundle of His, the left and right bundle branches and Purkinje fiberpapillary muscle junctions of the left and right ventricles, and, for comparison with the specialized conduction system, observations on the myocardium of the left ventricle." @default.
