After three years as Deputy Director of the English Teaching Information Centre he updated himself with a TEFL MA in 1980. In his spare time he maintained his interest in Islamic languages and civilization by writing a PhD thesis on Persian tilework. He is married, with two sons, and does batiks and translation as a hobby. Professionally, he has recently turned to language testing and the language-literature interface.
