- W1988095890 abstract "Post operative surgical units (POSU) are designed to accept surgical patients undergoing mostly elective surgery who require level two critical care postoperatively [1]. During busy periods level two facilities may become overwhelmed with emergency medical and surgical patients and elective surgery can be cancelled. We report the effect of opening a POSU on cancellations of major surgery due to lack of level two facilities during the first year of operation. We audited the critical care database for booked admissions and cancellations to HDU and POSU of elective major surgery for the year prior to, and the year following the opening of a six-bedded POSU. Chi squared test was used to compare occurrences of events before and after the opening of POSU. During the year prior to the opening of POSU there were 41 (12.6%) cancellations of elective operations which required level two care from 325 booked admissions. In the year following there were nine (1.5%) cancellations from 592 booked admissions. This is significant at p < 0.001. Seven of the cancellations occurred whilst POSU was used as a level two/three facility due to a month-long refurbishment of the existing HDU and ITU. Table showing number (%) of cancellations of elective surgery by surgical speciality before and after opening a POSU. POSU can have a significant effect on cancellations of major surgery in patients requiring level two care postoperatively. We would like to thank Sheila Reynolds for help with data collection." @default.
