- W1988126910 abstract "Summary Upon addition of mercuric chloride, the spectra of Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus (TBSV) and TBSV-RNA are shifted towards longer wavelengths, indicating that mercuric ions combine with the bases of encapsidated as well as isolated TBSV-RNA. Since the virus particles do not present any configurational change when mercuric ions react with encapsidated RNA, the reaction of Hg 2+ ions with free RNA could be compared with the reaction with encapsidated RNA. Spectrophotometric experiments and potentiometric mercury binding titration indicate that free TBSV-RNA forms two successive complexes: base-Hg-base and base-Hg + . Potentiometric titration of TBSV indicates that sulfhydril groups are the first mercury-binding sites (formation constant of about 10 21 ), and that the encapsidated TBSV-RNA forms the same types of mercury complexes as isolated TBSV-RNA. The intrinsic association constants are identical for both RNAs, within experimental errors. The comparison of the reactivity of Hg (II) ions with free and encapsidated TBSV-RNA and the mechanism of the reaction of Hg (II) ions with polynucleotide have lead to discuss the nature of the interactions between RNA and protein subunits in relation to the configuration of RNA inside the capsid." @default.
