- W1988214645 abstract "Plasma prolactin levels increase several fold immediately following tonic-clonic seizures, complex partial seizures, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) (Ohman et al. 1976; Trimble 1978; Whalley et al. 1982; Collins et al. 1983; Scott et al. 1986). Depth electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings suggest that spreading of the ictal discharge to subcortical (limbic) structures is necessary for the observed prolactin release (Sperling et al. 1986). In an attempt to elucidate the neurochemical substrate of this neuroendocrine response, earlier investigations focused on the possible role of the opioidergic system. However, we and others have shown that pretreatment with the specific opiate antagonist naloxone does not affect the prolactin response to ECT (Haskett et al. 1985; Papakostas et al. 1985; Turner et al. 1987; Price et al. 1988). Recent reports from our laboratory (Zis et al. 1988, 1989) and that of others (Papakostas et al. 1988) indicate that the ECT-induced prolactin surge is restrained significantly following pretreatment with the classic serotonin receptor antagonist" @default.
