• W1988250653 abstract "We have used the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to examine the arterial endothelium of rabbits in regions where local blood flow patterns are predictable. After silver staining the vessel, endothelial cell boundaries were clearly visible and consequently, the relationship between local flow and the shape and orientation of cells could be assessed. In straight unbranched regions of the aorta, cells were elongated and oriented in the direction of flow. At renal ostia and the iliac bifurcation, division of flow was associated with re-orientation of endothelial cells over very short distances. Small regions of round or polygonal cells with no preferred orientation could be found at the precise site of flow division. Coarctation of the aorta resulted in swirling patterns of endothelial cells suggestive of vortices downstream from the coarctation and regions of round cells with no orientation were also observed. Occlusion of a renal artery resulted in a re-orientation of cells on the flow divider with cells becoming aligned along the axis of the aorta. In the stump of the renal artery, cells were rounded with no orientation. These results indicate that endothelial cells are aligned by local blood flow. Cells are greatly elongated and show well-defined orientation in fast, unidirectional flow fields. On the other hand, regions of disturbed flow or stagnant flow result in much rounder cells with no obvious orientation." @default.
